Matthew Barley/Cellist

Music is well said to be the speech of Angels.

Warm in Zagreb…

Just finished my project in Zagreb with packed out concert at the very warm Lisinski Hall with live TV relay and the Croatian President in the front row! It was an exciting evening, the 55th anniversary concert of the renowned Zagreb Soloists who began their life as the ensemble of great cellist Antonio Janigro (his picture hung rather ominously above me during the concert!). As well as the Haydn C major concerto, I played a couple of new arrangements of a Golijov song, and one of my favourite tangos (Milonga del Angel) by Piazzolla, which worked really nicely with a string orchestra, and the ensemble played it really well – lots of lazy slides and pungent attacks. It’s been a very memorable week, and I wish the group the very best as they enter a new era with their wonderful new leader, ‘Boro’ – good times ahead I think. I never did get round to the frogs in the restaurant.
