Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.

The First Emperor

I’ve just been to the most amazing exhibition at the British Museum – The First Emperor. It’s about the Chinese Emperor – Qin Shihuangdi, who in fact united many smaller kingdoms to creat what we know as China, 2,200 years ago; joined up some existing bits of wall to make the 6,000Great Wall; and spent 30 years constructing his tomb, guarded by 8,000 lifesize terracotta warriors that were famously found by mistake by a farmer digging for a well in 1974. A collection of the warriors has come to London, with a spectacular and moving exhibition about Qin Shihuangdi’s achievements – which include building 270 palaces for himself. The warriors themselves are just extraordinary: beautiful, fierce, and so lifelike…if you’re in London – go see!
